Special Education Teacher. What issues did you notice that students with accommodations faced during virtual learning? The students had a difficult time keeping up with the assignments or completing them based on the instructions given. What resources did your school system offer students with accommodations and parents? The parents were given instructions on how to complete tasks with the student, but most of them were lost as well. Additional Comments: Taking classes online is difficult for students and parents who have limited experience and learning disabilities.

Consultant for several districts nationwide; Grant Evaluator for Macon County Schools. What issues did you notice that students with accommodations faced during virtual learning? Lack of instructional support, limited (if any) accommodations, and 504 Plan lapses. What resources did your school system offer students with accommodations and parents? IEP-based, 504 Plans, and GEP-based. What ages are your children? 10,13,16 What accommodations does your children have? Gifted. What school system are your children enrolled in? During the pandemic; Macon County and Connections Academy. What were the pros of virtual learning for your students? They appreciated the self paced learning environment. What was the cons of virtual learning for your students? In both the Virtual Academy and the school who transitioned to an online environment due to the pandemic; the children were not able to get the instant feedback that they preferred in-person. The interactions with the gifted program teachers changed. They interacted with them less often. We assumed that the gifted teachers took on more responsibilities and thus were unable to provide the gifted children with their individual needs. The child who had attended the virtual academy during the pandemic mentioned that the they had an increased workload. They felt more challenged, and they were responsible for submitting projects instead of typical class assignments. This was a positive from both the parents’ and students’ perspectives. The child in a gifted program in a traditional school did not engage with the gifted teacher during the pandemic. Their experience was completely different during the pandemic. Do you feel that the school system provided your student with the adequate tools to be successful during virtual learning? One of the schools did and the other did not. What ages are your children? 15,14,9,8,5.

They can do it at their own pace (Self paced work). What was the cons of virtual learning for your students? Some of the material was hard for them to grasp, especially when it came to math and reading. Limited distractions and self paced work. What was the cons of virtual learning for your students? Not being able to be around peers and not being able to contact the teacher in real time. Yes, She was able to receive all of her accommodations during virtual learning. |
